Anderson First in State to Offer TomoTherapy for Cancer Patients
Doctors at Anderson Regional Cancer Center are now treating cancer patients with the most advanced radiation system available, rivaling systems used at some of the largest cancer treatment centers in the world. Anderson’s new TomoTherapy System® is one of only 13 TomoTherapy systems in the nation, and the only one in the state of Mississippi. The TomoTherapy System delivers treatments with increased speed and precision while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
“At Anderson Regional Cancer Center, we take pride in offering the most advanced cancer treatment options available,” said Dr. Scott Anderson, Radiation Oncologist. “The TomoTherapy System’s unique design and capabilities give our team the ability to target tumors in ways never before thought possible and deliver aggressive, extremely accurate and highly individualized treatment for each patient. We’re excited to offer this leading-edge technology to our patients as part of our continued commitment to high quality patient care.”
TomoTherapy uses a linear accelerator merged onto a computed tomography (CT) based framework, which allows radiation to be delivered in a helical fashion from 360 degrees Treatments can be continuously delivered to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions also provides assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor, reducing the risk of short- and long-term side effects.
Anderson added, “The TomoTherapy System can efficiently treat large tumors, or multiple tumors in different areas of the body in the same treatment session. The system also enables patients with recurring tumors to receive additional radiation that would not have been performed with traditional radiation systems.”
The TomoTherapy System excels at treating cancers that are historically difficult to treat such as head and neck, esophageal and lung. TomoTherapy can increase the chances of controlling a solitary pulmonary nodule from 45 percent with surgical resection to 70 percent using this technology. In some cases, lung cancer patients will receive only one week of TomoTherapy treatments as compared to seven weeks with traditional radiation therapy systems.
“TomoTherapy has amazing promise for gynecologic and prostate cancers as well, and we are working with one of the most advanced planning systems in the world to help add those treatments to this program,” Anderson said.
TomoTherapy radiation sessions are non-invasive and typically pain-free. The TomoTherapy System is clinically proven to be effective and improve patients’ quality of life.
