What
Is Diabetes?
Diabetes is
a life-long disease in which the body needs help to use food
properly to give you energy. Diabetes is a disease caused by
either lack of insulin, inadequate amounts of insulin, or an
inability of the body to use insulin effectively. Diabetes is
the third most prevalent disease in the United States, and yet
public knowledge about diabetes is still limited. Diabetes affects
the eyes, heart, kidneys, nervous system and circulatory system.
Two
Types of Diabetes:
Type 1
Is insulin dependent. The majority of people with Type 1 diabetes
will be diagnosed as having developed the disease during childhood
or as a young adult.
Type 2
Develops gradually, and usually occurs around or after the
age of 40. Type 2 patients can often be managed by weight reduction,
exercise, control of diet, and occasionally oral medication.
Diabetes cannot be cured, but it an be controlled. How well
you live with diabetes depends on you.
Taking Charge
of your Life:
Diabetes can be controlled and complications decreased and/or
prevented through proper education. With proper education on self
management every person with diabetes can have a full and active
life. The quality of life is dependent on how successful the person
with diabetes can self-manage his/her disease. JARMC's Diabetes
Self Management Center teaches current,
up-to-date techniques to manage your diabetes with emphasis on wellness
rather than crises reactions.
The
Team Approach:
An evaluation and plan of care is established for each person attending
our center. The patient and his/her family is actively involved
in this plan of care. The health care team consists of the Certified
Nurse Educator, Registered Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist, Medical
Social Worker, and Pharmacist. JARMC's team will work together with
your family physician to provide you with complete care. The most
important team member is YOU!
Working together,
we can make a difference. The degree of each patient's participation
in the program is determined by the physician and the patient.
The
Patient :
While in the Self Management Program, each patient takes part in
a complete education and training program. The education program
at the Center involves group classes and individual lessons. Topics
covered include: Diet, Monitoring of Blood Sugar and Ketones, Medications,
Skin Care, Exercise, Sickday Rules, Complications and Research.
