Women's
Breast Care Clinic
Welcome to the new Women's Breast Care Clinic at Jeff Anderson Regional
Medical
Center. We have moved into our new location within the hospital and are
excited to be a
fully accredited digital mammography center in the Meridian area. We recently
received
a three year accreditation by the American College of Radiologist (ACR)
and the FDA .
Our clinic is located on the southwest side of the hospital on 22nd Avenue
just south of
the Emergency Department’s Ambulance Entrance. We have designated parking
directly
across from our new facility, but you may also park in the parking garage
which ever is
more convenient for you.
A New Ally in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Women's Breast Care Clinic is an imaging facility that is full field digital.
We have the
latest technology to give our patient's the best breast care available.
We have chosen the
SeleniaTM Digital Mammography system from Hologic which has a full field
image
receptor that allows us to image the smallest breast up to the largest
with the finest detail
available. Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital
detectors
to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer
monitor, and
transmitted and stored just like computer files.
From a patient's point of view, having a digital mammogram is very much
like having a
conventional screen-film mammogram. Both film-based and digital mammography
use
compression and x-rays to create clear images of the inside of the breast.
Unlike filmbased
mammography, digital mammograms produce images that appear on the
technologist's monitor in a matter of seconds. There is no waiting for
film to develop,
which can mean a shorter time spent in the breast imaging suite.
The Benefits of Digital Mammography
Unlike other parts of the body, the breast is composed mainly of soft tissue.
When breast
tissue is x-rayed, it creates an image that looks something like a smoky
haze making it
difficult to see tiny "spots", called microcalcifications,
and other subtle signs of early
cancer.
With digital mammography, the radiologist reviews electronic
images of the breast, using
special high-resolution monitors. The physician can adjust the brightness,
change
contrast, and zoom in for close ups of specific areas of interest. Being
able to manipulate
images is one of the main benefits of digital technology. To supplement
this technology,
the radiologist also has digital Computer Aided Detection (CAD). CAD
highlights
characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer. When activated,
it flags
abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer. CAD
is, in essence, a
second pair of eyes to view the mammogram. Digital mammography offers
a number of other practical advantages and patient
conveniences. Because there is no waiting for film to be developed it
can greatly reduce
the need for retakes due to over or under exposure. This potentially
saves additional time
and reduces your exposure to x-rays.
Because they are electronic, digital mammography images can be transmitted
quickly
across a network. Digital images can also be easily stored, copied without
any loss of
information, and transmitted and received in a more streamlined manner,
eliminating
dependence on only one set of "original" films. This means
that we can send your images
on a computer disk to a doctor of your choice without you picking up the
films if that is
the way your doctor prefers to review your images or we can print original
images for
your convenience.
We Now Have Stereotactic Capabilities
In our new facility we have the latest Stereotactic breast biopsy machine.
This gives us
the capability to locate the smallest breast mass or calcifications to
get a better diagnosis
of the pathology in your breast. We also have in house ultrasound capabilities
to better
delineate the solid mass from the cystic mass.
Early Detection is the Key
Because our primary goal has always been to deliver quality care to our
patients, we are
now offering digital mammography as part of our women's health diagnostic
services.
Mammograms play a central part in the early detection of breast cancer
because they can
detect changes in the breast that may be early signs of cancer, but are
too small or subtle
to be felt. The use of mammography has greatly enhanced the ability to
detect breast
cancers at earlier stages. Digital mammography shows great promise in the
fight against
breast cancer! Remember that an annual mammogram is one of your best defenses
against breast cancer.
We have chosen the SeleniaTM Digital Mammography system from Hologic because
we
believe that it offers the best technology available. Please come and see
our new facility
and have your yearly mammogram. Contact us at 601-553-6250 for an appointment.
